Reddit post claims computer game from 1990 predicted Bitcoin
Could it be possible that a 28-year-old computer game could predict Bitcoin?
According to a post on Reddit, the emergence of Bitcoin (BTC) was predicted by a video game in 1990.
The Final Fantasy III computer game made the prediction 28 years ago, according to a light-hearted post on Reddit.
As of April 18, the post has amassed more than three thousand upvotes from Redditors.
The post refers to a symbol from the computer game that looks eerily similar to Bitcoin’s logo.
The logo made an appearance on an object in the game that was initially released by Nintendo on April 27, 1990.
The appearance of the symbol in Final Fantasy III apparently coincidental, as the first Bitcoin block was mined on Jan. 3, 2009.
It isn’t the first time such a coincidence has been discovered by the Bitcoin community, however.
Similarities have been noticed in books such as “Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom” written in 2003 by Cory Doctorow which describes a Bitcoin-like currency Whuffie.
Other titles such as Neal Stephenson’s “Cryptonomicon” published in 2002, and “Future Imperfect” by David D. Friedman published in 2008 have other similar references.
Milton Friedman predicted the rise of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
The Nobel Prize-winning American economist made his prediction in 1999.
During an interview with NTU/F, Mr. Friedman described a payment of the future, saying:
“A method where buying on the Internet you can transfer funds from A to B, without A knowing B or B knowing A.”
Another ‘prediction’ was found in an episode of The Simpsons, showing Marge and Homer in front of a store called “Crypto Barn.”
The store’s sign describes itself as “A place for codes.”
The episode was first aired on March 2, 1997, and called “My Sister, My Sitter.”
